Since it is almost Halloween, what fascinates me is the story of La Llorona. The woman who drowned her children at the river because her husband was not faithful to her. She drowned them out of a jealous rage. It means the crying woman. It is a story I was told to get me to behave, but it is also folklore of Spanish descent. My mom told me, if you go by the rivers you can hear La Llorona crying for her kids. It scared me to bits when I was a child.
So I guess it was a scare tactic that worked on me when I was a kid. When I would misbehave, my mom used to tell me La Llorona is going to get me or she will take me to go see La Llorona. I was scared so I immediately behaved. My mom would tell me she is going to leave me by the river where La Llorona would be crying for her kids and she would take me too. All these years later, and I find out it is a myth. It never happened. As I got older, I wasn’t as scared of it because by then, I have been to plenty of rivers and had not heard anything. So after a while, it was not as it used to be but also I was a little older so misbehaving was not that fun anymore. Well that is my fascinating story. Happy Halloween everyone!
